IOAA 2026: India won 4 gold and 1 silver in astronomy

Share

IOAA 2026 India gold medals are the result from the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 25 September to 5 October 2026. All five Indian students on the team won a medal: four gold and one silver. The Press Information Bureau posted this on 5 October 2026. This page explains the contest in class 11 and 12 language, then says who should actually try the Indian selection path.

What this contest is

An olympiad here is not the Olympic Games. It is a school-level subject contest. Astronomy is the study of planets, stars and the sky. Astrophysics is the physics behind that sky: light, gravity, orbits and instruments. IOAA tests both.

India sent five students. PIB says they were accompanied by Professor Bhaswati Mookerjea of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, and Professor Sanved Kolekar of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru. The team did not travel as a coaching-centre batch. The leaders are from research institutes.

  • Pranjal Dixit, Hyderabad, Telangana — gold
  • Sumant Gupta, Delhi — gold
  • Akshat Srivastava, Gurugram, Haryana — gold
  • Arnav Sehrawat, Faridabad, Haryana — gold
  • Harshil Amitkumar Patel, Vadodara, Gujarat — silver

Where India stood

PIB says India was jointly third with the Vietnam guest team. Iran and South Korea were ahead, with five gold medals each. At the olympiad, 51 gold, 48 silver and 60 bronze medals were awarded. PIB also said that, for the first time since India began taking part in international olympiads in 1989, every Indian student in this year’s senior-level olympiads won either gold or silver. Across those senior contests, PIB counted 16 gold and 8 silver.

That last line is about the year’s senior olympiads together, not only astronomy. Do not write in a school speech that IOAA alone produced 16 gold medals.

What a class 11 or 12 student can do

A medal at IOAA is not a seat in an IIT and not a stipend. It is proof that a student can sit a hard astronomy paper and an observation round. The useful move this week is smaller.

If you like physics and the night sky, open the PIB note and write the five names correctly. Then check the current selection notice from HBCSE or the Indian Olympiad programme before you pay anyone. Stages, fees and dates change every year. A coaching ad is not the notice.

A practical week plan if you are in class 11: finish vectors, circular motion and basic optics in school physics; learn to read a star chart; solve one past astronomy olympiad paper under a timer. If you are in class 12 with board exams close, do not drop boards for an olympiad crash course. Use one evening a week only.

Who should skip

Skip paid “guaranteed international team” workshops. No one can sell you the Hanoi team. Skip it also if you dislike long calculations. IOAA is not a general-knowledge quiz on planet names.

Parents should ask one question of any institute: which official circular is this batch preparing for, and where is the PDF. If the answer is only a brochure, walk away.

Campus Reality has a related student page on World Space Week 2026. The medal list and dates are on the PIB release.

How to talk about it in assembly

Use this script and stop. India won four gold and one silver at the 19th IOAA in Hanoi, 25 September to 5 October 2026. All five students medalled. Iran and South Korea had five gold each. The official note is from PIB, Department of Atomic Energy, posted 5 October 2026.

Do not add college ranks, cash prizes, or “direct admission” lines. Those were not in the PIB note.
