Form 6 for students: how to register as a new voter

Share

Form 6 voter registration is the form a new Indian voter uses to get their name on the electoral roll. The Election Commission of India says a citizen can fill Form 6 online at the voters’ portal if they are 18 on the qualifying date. Class 12 students who turned 18 this year, or will turn 18 soon, are the people this page is for. It is not a court report. The official form wins if a headline and the portal disagree.

The basic words

The electoral roll is the voter list. Your name must be on that list before you can vote. EPIC is the voter photo identity card. An ordinary resident is a person who lives in that polling area, not only someone visiting for a week. Form 6 is only for a new name. It is not the form for a spelling correction or a shift to a new city.

  • Form 6: new voter registration.
  • Form 6A: Indian citizen living abroad who has not taken another citizenship.
  • Form 7: deletion or objection.
  • Form 8: correction, shift, replacement card, or disability marking.
  • Qualifying dates used by ECI: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October.

Who can apply

The Election Commission FAQ says you can enrol if you are an Indian citizen, you have turned 18 on the qualifying date, and you are ordinarily resident in the polling area where you want to be enrolled. The portal also says you may fill Form 6 if you are 18 or will turn 18 in a few months. Read both lines on the official site before you submit. Do not rely on a coaching WhatsApp note.

Today is 6 October 2026. The October qualifying date, 1 October 2026, has passed. If you turned 18 on or before that date and your name is missing, this is the week to search the roll and file Form 6 if the portal allows it. If your 18th birthday is after 1 October 2026, the next qualifying date in the ECI list is 1 January 2027. You can still read the form now. You should not pay anyone to “hold a seat” on the roll.

How to do it without a middleman

Online, start at voters.eci.gov.in. The page has New Voter Registration and a Form 6 link. You can also use the Voter Helpline app and search your name first. Offline, Form 6 is free at the Electoral Registration Officer, Assistant Electoral Registration Officer, and Booth Level Officer. ECI says the form is available free of cost. Any agent who asks a fee for “fast EPIC” is a reason to stop.

Before you fill anything, search your name. A duplicate Form 6 creates a mess. Keep the acknowledgement. Do not send Aadhaar or marksheets to a random link. Use the eci.gov.in or voters.eci.gov.in address yourself.

Who should skip

Skip Form 6 if your name is already on the roll. Use Form 8 if the photo, address or spelling is wrong. Skip it if you are not an Indian citizen. NRI students use Form 6A, not Form 6, and only if they have not taken another citizenship. Skip campus camps that collect cash and say they will “submit in bulk”. You can submit your own form.

School headlines this week also mentioned a Form 6 court argument. That is a separate legal story. It does not replace the portal. If a BLO or a news clip tells you the form has changed, open the ECI page and match the form number before you sign.

For how Campus Reality reads official notices, see how to read an Indian recruitment PDF without getting fooled. The registration steps are on the Election Commission how-to-register FAQ, and the form itself is on voters.eci.gov.in.

A 20-minute check

Search your name on the voter list. If it is missing and you were 18 on 1 October 2026, start Form 6 on the official portal. If a site asks for a fee, close it. If you are still 17, note 1 January 2027 and do not share documents with an agent.
