IIT Delhi has taken a significant step to strengthen academic mobility between IITs and NITs. The institute has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 18 National Institutes of Technology to create a direct postgraduate admission pathway for high-performing final-year NIT students.

What Exactly Has Changed?

Under the new framework, eligible final-year undergraduate students from the partner NITs can apply for the following programmes at IIT Delhi without qualifying GATE:

  • MTech
  • MS (Research)
  • PhD

This is being called the Early Admission Scheme. Admission will still be subject to academic and research performance criteria set by IIT Delhi.

Special Exchange Opportunity

In addition to direct admission, selected undergraduate students from these NITs will also get the chance to spend their final year at IIT Delhi as Special Exchange Students. During this period, they can take advanced courses and work on research projects under IIT Delhi faculty.

Why This Matters

Traditionally, GATE has been the primary national-level gateway for postgraduate admissions in engineering and research. By creating this additional route, IIT Delhi aims to:

  • Identify research-oriented talent earlier
  • Reduce transition barriers for students already studying in Centrally Funded Technical Institutions
  • Strengthen collaboration between IITs and NITs

This move is particularly important for strong performers in NITs who want to pursue higher studies or research without the additional pressure of GATE.

Final Word

This is one of the more meaningful structural changes in recent years for students studying in NITs. It opens a clearer and faster pathway into IIT Delhi’s postgraduate and research ecosystem for academically strong candidates.

Students from the 18 partner NITs should keep an eye on official notifications from their institutes and IIT Delhi for eligibility criteria, application timelines, and selection process details.
