Official Details

IIT Madras assistant professor 2026 hiring is a rolling faculty call under Advertisement No. IITM/R/1/2026 dated 27 February 2026. Applications stay open through the year until 15 October 2026. Apply only at facapp.iitm.ac.in. Detailed notice: Advertisement_RA-2026.pdf.

This is not a non-teaching staff drive and not a project JRF card. It is a regular Assistant Professor (Grade II and Grade I) recruitment on the IIT Madras campus in Chennai. The PDF says the number of vacancies is about 40 and that the number can change. Unfilled posts from earlier rounds after the CEI Act, 2019 may also be filled in this window.

Who IIT Madras assistant professor 2026 is actually for

IIT Madras wants people who already have a Ph.D., a first class or equivalent at the degree before the Ph.D., and a record that can stand a department seminar. Annexure-1 on the faculty portal lists the specialisations each department is shopping for. You pick the department on the form; one application can cover more than one department.

The eighteen units printed on the notice are Aerospace Engineering; Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering; Biotechnology; Chemistry; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Computer Science & Engineering; Data Science and Artificial Intelligence; Electrical Engineering; Engineering Design; Humanities & Social Sciences; Management Studies; Medical Sciences & Technology; Mechanical Engineering; Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; Ocean Engineering; Physics; and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Who should skip this window

Skip if you will have completed 36 years on 31 December 2026 and you do not fall under the printed age-relaxation groups (OBC, SC/ST, PwD, women). Skip if you do not hold a Ph.D. Skip if you only want a project or ICSR contract. Skip if you need a locked seat count before you write a research plan — the PDF says recruitment in an area can stop mid-window once that area is filled.

Dates, fee and official links

Advertisement date: 27 February 2026. Rolling submissions until 15 October 2026. There is no separate “open date” after that line. Application fee is not printed in the pages extracted from Advertisement_RA-2026.pdf. Do not pay a third-party listing site. Use facapp.iitm.ac.in and the Dean (Faculty) mail printed on the PDF: deanfacultyoffice@iitm.ac.in.

Queries go to Dean (Faculty), IIT Madras, Chennai 600 036.

Available positions

No post-wise UR / OBC / SC / ST / EWS seat grid is printed. The notice only states MoE reservation percentages: SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC (NCL) 27%, EWS 10%, plus PwD rules, and that instructions issued till the interview date apply. Women candidates are encouraged to apply. Treat “about 40” as a planning figure, not a guarantee.

1. Assistant Professor Grade II — Academic Pay Level 10

Minimum basic printed: Rs 70,900 (Level 10, Cell 8). After one year at that cell the incumbent moves to Academic Pay Level 11. Later movement to Grade I is an internal assessment after the experience rule is met.

Eligibility criteria. Ph.D. with first class or equivalent at the preceding degree, specialisation matching Annexure-1, consistently good academic record. Less than three years of post-Ph.D. industrial, research or teaching experience. Age: must not have completed 36 years as on 31 December 2026, with the printed relaxations.

2. Assistant Professor Grade I — Academic Pay Level 12

Minimum basic printed for direct recruits: Rs 1,01,500 (Level 12, Cell 1). After three years in Grade I the PDF moves the incumbent to Academic Pay Level 13A1 (Rs 1,31,400–2,04,700).

Eligibility criteria. Same Ph.D. and academic-record rule. At least three years of post-Ph.D. industrial, research or teaching experience. Same age line as Grade II.

Allowances follow Central Government rates for a Chennai station: DA, HRA, transport, telephone and the rest as per Institute rules. LTC, Children Education Allowance and NPS follow GoI rules. A higher start can be offered in deserving cases. New recruits get an initiation grant of Rs 5 lakh. Relocation from abroad: one-way economy airfare for the recruit and immediate family plus relocation up to Rs 1,50,000 or actual, whichever is less, if they serve three years. Inland joining has a parallel airfare-plus-relocation clause in the same section of the PDF.

Educational qualifications

Post Degree printed Experience printed
Assistant Professor Grade II Ph.D.; first class or equivalent at the preceding degree; department specialisation in Annexure-1 Less than 3 years post-Ph.D. industry / research / teaching
Assistant Professor Grade I Same Ph.D. rule At least 3 years post-Ph.D. industry / research / teaching

Qualification and experience are counted on the date you submit the form, not on 15 October.

Selection as written

The Institute shortlists against current department need. Selection runs in batches through the rolling window. Referees listed on the form are written to by IIT Madras, not by you attaching ready letters. Incomplete academic profiles are not taken forward. Upload the teaching plan, research plan, three best papers with a short write-up, and the rest of items D.2.1 to D.2.10. Mark an item “NR” if it does not apply. Do not leave a section blank.

Apply steps

  1. Read Advertisement_RA-2026.pdf and Annexure-1 on facapp.iitm.ac.in.
  2. Create / log in to the faculty application portal. One form can list more than one department in Section 8.
  3. Upload the signed scanned application and the academic-profile PDF the notice lists.
  4. Submit before the portal cuts off on 15 October 2026. Keep the Dean (Faculty) mail only for form problems, not for a second channel application.

Free official reading: the IIT Madras site iitm.ac.in for department pages, and the faculty portal for Annexure-1. Other campus staff and faculty notices sit on the jobs board.

Verify-before-you-pay: Campus Reality does not collect a fee. If a page asks for money and is not facapp.iitm.ac.in or an IIT Madras payment gateway named on that portal, stop.
