Official Details

NHAI internship 2026-27 covers two live windows: the Winter Internship Programme 2026-27 and the Term Internship Programme 2027. Student last date — 20 October 2026. Institute recommendation last date — 10 November 2026. Apply only on internshipsatnhai.digitalindiacorporation.in. Official press note — PIB PRID 2299419.

This is a Government of India internship under the National Highways Authority of India. You work on a live National Highway project or inside an NHAI / IHMCL division. It is not a private coaching certificate and not a campus PPO.

What NHAI actually does

NHAI builds and runs National Highways. Interns sit with planning, construction, operations and maintenance, asset management, road safety, finance, legal, media, IT or AI work, depending on the allotment. IHMCL (Indian Highways Management Company Limited) is also on the same portal pool.

The PIB note says institutions are identified using NIRF rankings and other academic benchmarks. If your college is not on the portal list, you cannot invent a login. Check the live institute list before you fill the form.

What kind of internship this is

Two separate tracks on one portal:

  • Winter Internship Programme 2026-27 — one month between December 2026 and January 2027. 541 positions.
  • Term Internship Programme 2027 — six months from January to June 2027. 542 positions.

Together that is 1,083 printed seats across 125 ongoing National Highway projects plus NHAI and IHMCL divisions. Inside that pool the PIB note reserves 100 seats for IIT students and 150 seats for NIT students.

Stipend is ₹20,000 per month under the NHAI Internship Policy, plus a certificate after successful completion. Students can mark a preferred duration and project location. Final allotment is by NHAI on merit, preference and availability. Academic calendars differ; the portal lets you state the slot you can actually attend.

Who should apply — and who should skip

Apply if you are a final-year or pre-final-year undergraduate or postgraduate student on a full-time course at a recognised university in India or abroad, your discipline is on the PIB list (Civil, IT, CSE, ECE, Electrical, Instrumentation, Data Science / AI and related; or Law, Journalism / Mass Communication, Rajbhasha, MA in HR / Industrial Relations & Personnel Management, MBA in HR / Finance / Marketing or equivalent), your institute appears on the portal, and you can travel to a highway project site or an NHAI office for the full slot.

Skip if you are in first year, you wanted a remote coding intern with no site work, your college is not listed on the portal, you cannot get an institute recommendation by 10 November 2026, or a WhatsApp group is collecting a “registration fee” for NHAI. The PIB note does not print an application fee.

A government internship of this kind is still a student training slot. It does not become an NHAI officer post. Treat the stipend line as policy text on the press note — confirm the payment clause on the offer after selection.

How to prepare (free, official)

How to apply without getting played

  1. Open only internshipsatnhai.digitalindiacorporation.in. Bookmark it. Lookalike domains are a common trap.
  2. Create the student login. Confirm your college name is on the institute list.
  3. Fill personal and academic details. Mark Winter or Term (or the duration the form allows). Mark location preference if asked.
  4. Submit by 20 October 2026. Then chase your faculty coordinator so the institute recommendation is in by 10 November 2026. A submitted student form without institute recommendation is not a finished application.
  5. Do not pay anyone a facilitation fee. The press note does not print one.
  6. After selection, read the offer for stipend payment month, attendance rule and reporting city before you book a train.
