Bank strike deferred: branches open 28-30 Sept 2026
Bank strike deferred is the overnight fact that matters on campus this Monday. The three-day nationwide strike called for 28, 29 and 30 September 2026 will not happen. Branches of public sector banks should work as usual today. This page is for Class 12 and college students who were told on WhatsApp that SBI would shut and UPI would stop.
If the words below feel new, read this first. A bank strike is when unionised bank staff stay away from branch counters. Digital rails — UPI, net banking, IMPS, most ATMs — usually keep running because those systems are automated. A strike is not the same as a bank holiday declared by the Reserve Bank of India. And “deferred” does not mean the demand is settled. It only means the walkout is paused.
What actually changed on Sunday night
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) met the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) at about 9:30 pm on Sunday, 27 September 2026. After that meeting the unions said agitational programmes and strike actions were deferred. C. H. Venkatachalam of AIBEA told The Hindu that all banks will function normally now.
Three things were put on a work list, not signed as a final deal:
- A high-level IBA–UFBU committee will sit immediately on the demand to treat the remaining Saturdays as holidays (the five-day banking week).
- Talks can start on changes to the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Scale IV and above officers.
- Older residual issues listed in minutes dated 8 March 2024 will be taken up again.
The five-day week is not law yet. Do not write “banks will now close every Saturday” in a current-affairs answer. The committee still has to consult customers and other stakeholders. UFBU had earlier flagged an indefinite strike from 26 October if talks failed. Sunday’s circular does not print a new strike date. Watch the next UFBU circular, not a forwarded poster.
Who this is for, who should skip
Use this page if you pay college fees, receive a stipend or salary into a public-sector bank, need a demand draft, or sit a banking-awareness paper.
Skip it if you only wanted a list of “which private banks stay open during a strike”. There is no strike this week. Also skip if you needed a job circular — those live on the jobs board.
What students should still do this week
Sunday opening of public sector banks and regional rural banks on 27 September already happened, on RBI approval, because the government wanted one extra working day before half-yearly closing on 30 September. That extra Sunday is over. From Monday, treat this as a normal banking week unless your own branch messages otherwise.
- If a fee last date or hostel rent falls this week, pay on UPI or net banking today. Do not wait for a rumour that “NEFT is down because of the strike”. Digital channels were expected to work even if the strike had gone ahead.
- If you still need a physical demand draft, locker access, cheque deposit, or KYC update, go to the branch on a weekday this week. Half-yearly closing on 30 September can still slow counters even without a strike.
- If your internship stipend hits an SBI or PNB account at month-end, check the credit on the app. The Department of Expenditure had already asked central government salaries due at month-end to be processed on 25 September. Private employers follow their own payroll file. The deferred strike is not a reason for a company to delay your stipend; if it does, write to the intern desk with the credit date printed on your offer letter.
- Keep one screenshot of your bank’s own advisory page, not a coaching-app card. Advisories from SBI and other PSBs last week asked customers to use YONO, UPI, ATMs and ADWMs. Those notes still help if a local branch is short-staffed.
Basic map: PSB vs private bank
India has 12 public sector banks right now, including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, Bank of India, Indian Bank, Central Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Indian Overseas Bank, UCO Bank and Punjab & Sind Bank. Regional rural banks sit under that public-sector umbrella. Most large private banks (HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak) were always less exposed to this particular UFBU call. That distinction mattered last week. It matters less this morning because the strike is off.
UPI, internet banking, mobile apps, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS are expected to run. Cheque clearing and locker access still need people at a desk. If a vendor asks you to pay a “strike convenience fee” to process a draft, walk away.
How to use this in an exam or interview
One clean line is enough: unions paused a three-day strike after IBA agreed to form a committee on five-day banking; branches are open; the five-day week itself is not notified. If the interviewer asks why September 30 mattered, say it is banks’ half-yearly closing date, which is why the Finance Ministry wanted Sunday working on 27 September.
Paid internships with dates this week are on the internships board. GATE 2027 regular registration without late fee closed yesterday; the late-fee window on IIT Madras GOAPS runs to 5 October 2026 — details stay on our GATE 2027 registration page. Dates on the official site win if they move.
We do not charge a fee to read this page. We do not sell a “bank exam crash course” off the back of a strike headline.
