IIT JAM 2027 admission — apply by 19 Oct

IIT JAM 2027 admission is the Joint Admission Test for Masters, organised this cycle by IIT Kharagpur. Last date to apply on the official homepage — 19 October 2026. Apply only through JOAPS, linked from jam.iitkgp.ac.in. JAM is the test used for M.Sc. and related postgraduate science seats at the IITs. It is not GATE. GATE is for engineering postgraduate admission and for some PSU jobs. A JAM score does not replace a GATE score.

What JAM actually does

JAM is a national test for students who have done, or are finishing, a bachelor’s degree in science or a related subject. The organising institute changes each year. For 2027 it is IIT Kharagpur. The homepage cards are the clock that matters: registration start, last date, exam date and result date. If a coaching site still says 12 October, ignore it. The live homepage says 19 October 2026.

What kind of seat this is

This form is for the test, not for a hostel room. After the result, admission to M.Sc., joint M.Sc.-PhD and related programmes is a separate counselling step on the JAM admission portal. A good score is not a seat. You still have to fill choices, upload documents and pay the admission fee if a seat is offered.

Who should apply — and who should skip

Apply if you want a postgraduate science seat at an IIT or a result-sharing institute and your degree matches the paper you pick. The seven papers named in the information brochure copies are Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Economics (EN), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS) and Physics (PH). You can apply for one or two papers. The degree and percentage rule is in the brochure on jam.iitkgp.ac.in. Read that table before you pay. The homepage cards do not reprint it.

Skip if you want M.Tech. That path is GATE, and the regular close on the IIT Madras GATE page is a different date. Skip if you want a design seat. That path is UCEED or CEED. Skip any “JAM registration centre” that is not joaps.iitkgp.ac.in.

IIT JAM 2027 admission dates and fee

Copies of the JAM 2027 information brochure in circulation put the fee at ₹1,000 for one paper and ₹1,350 for two papers for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates, and ₹2,000 and ₹2,700 for other candidates. Those figures are not on the homepage. If JOAPS shows a different number, the portal wins. The fee is non-refundable on those brochure copies.
