What IIT Bombay actually does
IIT Bombay is an Institute of National Importance at Powai, Mumbai. This form is for PhD in the Spring semester 2026-27. It is not JoSAA, not MTech through COAP, and not the research internship award that closed in September.
A PhD here means a department or centre accepts you after shortlisting. The form fee does not buy a seat. An unfinished application is not processed.
What kind of seat this is
Doctoral admission for Spring 2026-27. Academic units differ. Some want only a statement of purpose. SJMSOM wants a 1,500-word research proposal instead of the SoP. Humanities and Social Sciences, Policy Studies, CTARA and CSRE want both. IDC wants an SoP, a 1,500-word proposal, and recent work. Educational Technology wants a structured SoP with word caps.
Who should apply — and who should skip
Apply if your qualifying degree matches the academic unit you pick, you can write the SoP (500–600 words for most units), and you can pay before the fine window if you want the lower fee.
Skip if you are looking for a BTech seat, a taught MTech only, or the IIT Bombay research internship. Skip if you cannot name a research area. A blank SoP will not clear a department that asks for one.
