Official Details
IIT Roorkee PhD Spring 2026-27 admission opened on 21 September 2026. Last date for the online form is 20 October 2026, 11:59 pm. Apply from the doctoral admissions page: iitr.ac.in doctoral admissions. Brochure: Spring 2026-27 PDF.
What IIT Roorkee actually does
IIT Roorkee is an Institute of National Importance. This call is for PhD in the Spring semester, not for BTech through JEE and not for a project internship. Classes for this batch start on 11 January 2027. You register in person on 7–8 January 2027.
An Institute Assistantship is not automatic. The brochure says admission is subject to seats, faculty in that specialisation, and the assistantship.
What kind of seat this is
Full-time research scholar tracks include Institute Assistantship Research Scholars (IARS), Externally Funded Research Scholars (UGC, CSIR, DST, ICMR, DBT and similar fellowships), and In-service External Research Scholars. Part-time tracks exist for IIT Roorkee employees and for external candidates working within 100 km, where leave rules differ. Golden Girl is a supernumerary route for women, by interview. SAKUNTALA is for women with a BTech, BE, BArch or BDes from an MoE-funded technical institute and CGPA 8.5.
Who should apply — and who should skip
Apply if you meet the common minimum eligibility and the department minimum. Master’s applicants: CGPA 6.0 or 60% for General, GEN-EWS and OBC; CGPA 5.50 or 55% for SC, ST and PwD. A national test such as GATE, CEED, JEST, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET (including lectureship) is the usual extra, unless an exemption applies.
Skip if you only have a three-year bachelor’s and no master’s, and the department does not list a bachelor route. Skip the in-service track if you do not have two years in a government body, PSU, recognised institute, or a registered company with turnover above Rs 20 crore. Skip if you cannot travel to Roorkee for the written test or interview.
