Five classical language centres: what a student should do this week

Five classical language centres of excellence were approved by the Ministry of Education on 3 October 2026. If you study Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali or Prakrit, this is a research home being built at a named university. It is not an admission form, and it is not a job notice.

A classical language, in plain words, is a language the Government of India has recognised for its old written tradition. Classical does not mean the language is dead. Assamese, Bengali and Marathi are spoken every day. Pali and Prakrit are older languages you mostly meet in texts, inscriptions and religious literature. A Centre of Excellence, or CoE, is a unit inside a university that is supposed to do deeper work than a normal department class: research, digitisation of old texts, and training of scholars. The ministry has not published a student application date. If someone asks you for a fee to “reserve a seat”, do not pay.

Where the five classical language centres will sit

The Indian Express report of the ministry statement, dated 3 October 2026, names these hosts. The ministry said the centres mark a step to strengthen study, research and preservation of these languages. It did not publish seat counts, stipends or a last date.

  • Classical Assamese: Tezpur University, Assam.
  • Classical Bengali: Visva-Bharati University, West Bengal.
  • Classical Marathi: Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Pune.
  • Classical Pali: Central University of Odisha.
  • Classical Prakrit: Central University of Gujarat.

The same report says the centres will work on four things: a platform for research and scholarly work, preservation and digitisation, wider sharing of the language heritage, and a stronger academic network in that region. Digitisation means scanning and cataloguing manuscripts so a student in another city can read them without travelling. It is not an app launch.

Who this is for, and who should skip

This is for you if you are in class 12 and planning a BA in one of these languages, or you are already in BA, MA or a research year at one of the five campuses. It is also for a school teacher of that language who wants a later research path. It is useful for an exam student only as a fact: which language, which campus, which ministry. Do not treat it as a vacancy.

Skip it this week if you do not study these languages and you need a stipend or a job before December. There is no advertised pay. Skip it if a coaching centre says the CoE will “guarantee” a UGC fellowship. The notice does not say that. The official page wins when a date appears. Until then, the university site is the clock, not a WhatsApp poster.

What you can do in the next seven days

First, open the Ministry of Education site and search the press release yourself: education.gov.in. If the release is not on the homepage, search the site for “classical languages” and the date 1 or 3 October 2026. Save the PDF or the page. A screenshot of a news article is not the notice.

Second, email the language department at the host university, not a broker. Ask three plain questions: has the centre started, is there a student or research call, and where will the call be posted. Use your college email if you have one. One email is enough. Do not send money, Aadhaar photos or marksheets to a Gmail address that is not on the university domain.

Third, if you are still in class 12, use the week to check the real BA route. For Marathi, look at Deccan College admissions. For Bengali, look at Visva-Bharati. For Assamese, look at Tezpur University. For Pali and Prakrit, look at the Central Universities named above, and also at your state university, because a CoE does not close other colleges. Admission rules for 2026-27 are already on those sites or will be. The CoE does not replace CUET or the university form.

Fourth, start a small proof file if this is your subject. Ten pages of notes on one text, with the edition you used, is more useful than a poster. A researcher later will ask what you read, not which reel you watched. If you want the placement side of a language degree, read how recruiters treat skills against the degree on this Campus Reality note. A language CoE will not replace a portfolio if you later want publishing, teaching or archive work.

What would make this a real opportunity

A real call will name the campus, the programme, the last date, the fee if any, and the official URL. It will sit on the university domain or on education.gov.in. It will not ask you to pay a “registration agent”. Fellowships, if they come, will have their own eligibility. Until that page exists, the honest line is: the centres are approved, seats are not open, and the ministry text does not mention a stipend.

If your campus is not on the list, you have not missed a form. The other classical languages already have their own centres from earlier years. This October decision covers these five. Check your own department notice board before you travel for a centre that has not advertised a seat.
