Google Visakhapatnam AI data centre uses air cooling: what students should know

Share

Google Visakhapatnam AI data centre uses air cooling to limit water use in a city that already faces shortages. The project is part of a $15 billion investment and is set to open in 2028 as Google’s largest AI hub outside the United States.

What is a data centre and why does cooling matter?

A data centre is a large building filled with computers that store data and run services like search, maps, and artificial intelligence. These computers produce a lot of heat. Cooling keeps them from overheating. Most big centres use water cooling, which needs large amounts of fresh water. Air cooling uses fans and outside air instead, so it uses much less water.

Google checked the local water supply in Visakhapatnam and chose air cooling because the area is already under pressure. Company executives said the main water use will be for restrooms and kitchens, similar to a normal office. Google has also said it will replenish 120 percent of the non-cooling freshwater it uses by 2030 and will invest in clean energy and power upgrades.

Why people are protesting

  • Water: Residents worry about existing shortages. Officials say residential supply will not be diverted, but many remain unconvinced.
  • Land: Questions about how land was acquired and effects on farmland.
  • Electricity and heat: Data centres need a lot of power. Heat from the facility is another local concern.
  • Jobs: Construction jobs are expected, but permanent high-skill tech roles may be limited at first. Estimates of indirect jobs have been high, yet they are not guaranteed.

The official notice and company statements win over social-media claims. Check the latest from the Andhra Pradesh government and Google before relying on any number.

What a student can do this week

This is not a placement notice. It is infrastructure that will shape tech and energy jobs over the next few years. If you are interested in computer science, electronics, or data work:

  • Learn basic Python and how cloud services store and process data. Free courses on NPTEL or Google’s own learning resources are enough to start.
  • Understand energy and water use. Data centres are part of why electricity demand is rising. Knowing this helps in interviews and projects.
  • Look at related open notices on Campus Reality internships and jobs. Filter for engineering or computer science.
  • Read the earlier note on AI news for Indian students for context on models and skills.

Who should skip: students who only want a guaranteed job next month. The centre opens in 2028. Construction and local supplier work may appear sooner, but check official sources.
