India’s Quantum Computing Push: What Students Can Do Now
India’s quantum computing push includes plans for a large quantum computer in Amaravati early next year and new training facilities at colleges like MIT Bengaluru. Students who want research or tech careers can start learning the basics this semester.
Quantum computing is different from the computers and phones you use every day. Normal computers use bits that are either 0 or 1. Quantum computers use qubits that can be 0 and 1 at the same time in a special way. This lets them try many possibilities at once for certain hard problems. They are not faster for every task. They may help later with drug discovery, materials science, finance modelling, and secure communication. Real everyday use is still years away for most applications.

What is happening in India right now
IBM plans to install what it calls India’s largest quantum computer at the Quantum Valley Tech Park in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, early in 2027. The project is backed by the state and involves TCS. IBM India MD Sandip Patel said the facility is almost ready and machines should arrive early next year. The focus is practical applications and preparing companies for post-quantum cryptography (new security methods that quantum computers cannot easily break).
Separately, MIT Bengaluru launched a 25-qubit quantum facility in mid-October 2026. It aims to train 100 quantum engineers by December 2026 and runs awareness programmes including for Class 10 and 12 students. The National Quantum Mission supports research in computing, communication, sensing, and materials.
- IBM-TCS quantum system planned for Amaravati early 2027.
- MIT Bengaluru 25-qubit system already running for training.
- Goal of training large numbers of quantum developers in coming years.
- Applications still 3-5 years from mainstream for many uses.
- Skills in linear algebra, Python, and quantum concepts help now.
Official details come from company statements and the National Quantum Mission. For the latest on Amaravati, check Andhra Pradesh government and IBM India updates. MIT Bengaluru has its own campus announcements.
Who should care and who can wait
Engineering and science students interested in research careers, quantum materials, cryptography, or advanced computing should pay attention. College projects or internships that touch quantum concepts or related skills can become useful proof of work.
If you are focused on immediate campus placements in standard software roles, quantum is not urgent. Most companies hiring freshers in 2026 still look for Python, data skills, and domain knowledge rather than quantum expertise. You can skip deep study if your next exam or placement cycle is the priority.

Practical next steps for students
Learn what a qubit is and the basic idea of superposition and entanglement from free online notes or college courses. Practice Python and linear algebra. Look for free or low-cost quantum programming tools such as Qiskit (IBM’s open toolkit). Document any simulation or small project. Attend any campus talk or webinar on the National Quantum Mission.
Common mistakes: thinking quantum computers will replace normal computers next year (they will not), or expecting free access to the Amaravati machine as a student (access will be managed). Another mistake is ignoring the security side — post-quantum cryptography is a practical area companies already prepare for.
The National Quantum Mission and institute programmes remain the official path. Verify any training opportunity on the institute or government site before paying fees. Campus Reality does not collect fees or guarantee seats.
This explainer uses public statements as of 15 October 2026. Official announcements from IBM, TCS, Andhra Pradesh, MIT Bengaluru, and the National Quantum Mission win if details change.
