PSU bank jobs barely grew: what the 5-year numbers mean for students

PSU bank jobs barely grew between FY22 and FY26, even while public sector banks handled far more deposits and loans. If you are in Class 12, first year, or a final-year student treating SBI/IBPS as the only safe plan, this page is the number check before you lock the next six months.

A PSU bank is a government-owned bank such as State Bank of India or Bank of Baroda. A private bank is owned by shareholders, such as HDFC Bank or Axis Bank. Headcount means how many people are on the payroll. Total business, in bank reports, usually means deposits plus loans. Those two lines can move in opposite directions when software, retirements, and mergers do the extra work.

What the FY22 to FY26 table actually says

Business Today, using the employment series that sat next to RBI business figures, reported this on 26 September 2026. Banking as a whole added 2.72 lakh jobs, from 16.43 lakh staff in FY22 to 19.15 lakh in FY26. Public sector banks moved only from 7.60 lakh to 7.63 lakh. That is a 0.10% compound annual growth rate. Private banks went from 6.47 lakh to 8.32 lakh. Other groups, including regional rural banks, small finance banks, foreign banks and payments banks, went from 2.36 lakh to 3.20 lakh.

In the same window, PSU total business rose about 56%, from Rs 181.5 lakh crore on 31 March 2022 to Rs 283.3 lakh crore on 31 March 2026, per the RBI figures carried in that report. Deposits rose from Rs 107.2 lakh crore to Rs 156.3 lakh crore. Loans and advances rose from Rs 74.3 lakh crore to Rs 127 lakh crore. Net profit rose from Rs 0.67 lakh crore to Rs 1.98 lakh crore. Gross NPAs fell from 7.3% to 1.9%. Capital adequacy rose from 14.6% to 16.6%.

Private-bank headcount also dipped from 8.47 lakh in FY24 to 8.32 lakh in FY26 after a hiring burst. So this is not “private banks hire forever.” It is “PSU staff strength is almost replacement, not expansion.”

  • FY22 PSU staff: 7.60 lakh. FY26: 7.63 lakh.
  • FY22 private staff: 6.47 lakh. FY26: 8.32 lakh.
  • Whole sector added 2.72 lakh jobs. PSU share of that increase is tiny.
  • PSU business still jumped to Rs 283.3 lakh crore.

Who this is for, and who should skip

For: students who have already opened an IBPS or SBI PO/Clerk notification this year and need a reality check on volume. Also for commerce and economics students who must explain “jobless growth” in a bank with one table.

Skip this page if you only want this week’s last date. Deadlines live on the official PDF and on our jobs board. Closed windows stay closed. Do not treat this explainer as an application form.

Also skip if you need a guarantee that “PSU hiring is dead.” It is not dead. SBI and other PSBs still run PO, Clerk, and specialist drives. Those drives often replace people who retired. Replacement hiring is real. Expansion hiring is the part that barely showed up in the five-year total.

What to do this week, not next year

1. Open the live list at sbi.co.in careers and ibps.in. Write down only windows that are still open. If a last date has passed, stop forwarding that PDF.

2. Split your plan on paper: PO/Clerk (generalist) versus specialist (IT, risk, law, CA). Specialist posts need a degree match. Generalist posts need speed on reasoning, quant, English, and GA. Mixing both without a calendar usually wastes the fee.

3. If you are targeting private banks or NBFCs, treat campus internships and a clean Excel-plus-communication sample as the filter, not an IBPS mock rank. Private hiring in this data grew faster than PSU hiring. That does not mean walk-in magic. It means more of the new seats sat outside the government exam hall.

4. If you sit UPSC or state PSC, copy the two rows only: PSU staff +3,000 over four years, business +56%. Add the source line. Do not invent a “government stopped hiring banks” slogan. The official notice for the next CRP still wins.

5. Check in-hand versus CTC before you celebrate any offer. Our first-salary pages exist for that math. A PO letter and a private sales letter are different monthly realities.
