Internship stipend actually paid — how to check before you join

Internship stipend actually paid is not the number on the poster. It is the amount that hits an account after TDS, delayed joining, and “stipend after completion.”

Campus groups treat ₹10,000/month as a fact. Then the intern joins, works six weeks, and is told payment starts after a certificate, a manager approval, or the next finance cycle. Some never see it. The offer letter still said “stipend.”

This is a check you run before you resign a campus project, shift cities, or skip a semester paper. It is not legal advice. The offer letter and the official portal beat this page.

What “stipend” usually means in India

The word covers four different deals. Students mix them.

  • Monthly, in bank, during the internship. Best case. Still ask: which date of the month, and after how many days of attendance.
  • After completion. DPIIT-style public pages have used this language: money after the process is finished, not in week two. Cash-flow problem if you moved cities.
  • Split public + company. PM Internship Scheme Pilot Round 3 public design is in this family: government DBT plus a company share, plus a joining grant in the current write-up. Two payers means two failure points.
  • Unpaid with a certificate. Still called an internship on LinkedIn. If the letter does not name a rupee figure and a payer, treat it as unpaid.

If the recruiter will not say which of the four you are in, you do not have a stipend. You have a hope.

Paper that actually matters

WhatsApp “selected” screenshots are not paper. Collect these before you travel.

  • Offer or engagement letter on letterhead or official portal PDF, with your name, start date, end date, city, reporting manager.
  • Exact stipend line: amount, frequency, who pays (company / ministry / both).
  • Bank-transfer clause: account in your name, not a coordinator’s UPI.
  • Leave, attendance, and “stipend withheld if…” lines.
  • Certificate condition: paid even if the certificate is late, or paid only after the certificate.
  • Official apply URL that matches the issuer. For the current PMIS pilot that URL is pminternship.mca.gov.in.

No letter, no join. A verbal “we always pay by the 10th” dies when the HR person leaves.

The five checks before you say yes

1. Who is the payer on record?
Company payroll, government DBT, and “mentor will send GPay” are not the same risk. If PMIS: confirm the listing is on the MCA portal, not a clone. If a private firm: GST name on the letter should match the bank account that will pay you. If a professor project: ask whether the money is a project head that already exists, or “we will apply for a grant.”

2. When does the first rupee move?
Ask for the first pay date in writing. “Monthly” can mean day 45. “After completion” can mean 60 days after your last working day. If you need rent in week one, that gap is the real stipend.

3. What gets cut?
TDS on professional fees, hostel recovery, ID-card deposit, “uniform,” and unpaid notice if you leave early. A ₹9,000 line can become ₹7,000 after tax and a deposit you never see again. Ask whether they issue a TDS certificate.

4. Have last cycle’s interns been paid?
This is the only check that beats the brochure. Mail or call two people from the previous batch — LinkedIn, seniors, placement cell. Ask: first credit date, full amount, and whether anyone is still waiting. If nobody from last year will answer, that is data.

5. What happens if they delay?
Is there a written grievance email? For a ministry scheme, a portal ticket. For a campus internship cell, a named officer. If the only channel is the same WhatsApp group that sent the offer, you have no lever after you join.

Red flags that the stipend will not land

  • You must pay a “registration,” “training,” or “security” fee to a personal UPI to join.
  • The offer is only a poster. No PDF, no portal login, no employee ID in process.
  • Stipend will be paid in cash by a team lead.
  • They want your original degree or Aadhaar as a deposit.
  • “Certificate first, money later, maybe.”
  • Company name on the intern group does not match the letter.
  • They refuse to put the amount in the letter “because it varies.”

Walk. An unpaid month in a new city costs more than a missed logo on LinkedIn.

How to ask without sounding difficult

You are not being rude. You are reading the contract. Mail the HR or faculty coordinator with four lines:

  • Please confirm stipend amount, payer name, and first credit date.
  • Please confirm whether payment is monthly during the term or after completion.
  • Please share the official offer / engagement letter PDF.
  • Please share the email ID for payment delays.

If they get angry at that mail, they were not going to pay on time.

Read the parent notice the same way you would a job PDF. The method is in how to read an Indian recruitment PDF without getting fooled. Same clocks: crucial date, last date to apply, last date for fee, and the line that says who is excluded.

Scheme examples — treat as design, not a promise

Public write-ups for PMIS Pilot Round 3 have described about ₹9,000 a month (government DBT plus a company minimum) and a joining grant, age 18–25, duration 6–9 months, official door pminternship.mca.gov.in. Company cards on that portal still close on their own dates. A scheme being open till December 2026 does not pay you if that listing closed in September.

DPIIT internship pages have described ₹10,000 a month after the completion process, with an application window that has run 1 September–31 October. That is a different cash-flow story than a monthly salary. Confirm on the ministry page before you budget rent on October money in November.

Both figures move. If the letter in your inbox disagrees with this article, the letter wins.

Who should skip this internship

  • You cannot float 30–60 days without the first credit and they will only pay after completion.
  • The city rent is higher than the stated stipend and there is no hostel seat.
  • The letter has no rupee figure.
  • Someone is asking for a fee to “confirm the slot.”
  • You would be leaving a campus lab that already pays, for a brand name that does not.

A six-month unpaid “exposure” internship is a cost. Add it like rent. If the cost is fine, join with your eyes open. Do not call it a stipend.

Deloitte’s 2026 campus reporting is one reason internships matter: they are turning into the long interview. That only helps if you can afford to finish the term. An intern who leaves in week five because the money never came does not get the PPO conversation.

Campus Reality editorial note: stipend lines for PMIS and DPIIT above follow public scheme design as of early September 2026. Verify on the official domain and on your own letter before you travel or pay anything.
