India Mobile Congress 2026: what chip and AI talks mean for students

Share

India Mobile Congress 2026 is a four-day telecom and tech show in New Delhi, from 7 to 10 October, not a campus placement drive. If you are in Class 12 or first-year college and the reels say AI jobs are being given out at IMC, slow down. This note says what the event is, what a chip and a 5G network actually are, and what you can do before the halls close on 10 October.

The clock is short. The event ends on 10 October 2026. After that, the useful part is the skill you start, not the badge you missed.

What the event is, in plain words

India Mobile Congress 2026 is the 10th edition. The Department of Telecommunications and the Cellular Operators Association of India organise it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on 8 October 2026 at about 10 am at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, and addressed the hall. The printed theme is Scale Without Boundaries.

The official note lists four pillars: Srishti, building the future; Samvardhan, fueling growth; Sashakt, expanding opportunities; and Suraksha, strengthening trust. It also says the show expected more than 1.5 lakh people from over 100 countries, 500-plus partners and exhibitors, 600-plus startups and 900-plus speakers. Those are organiser figures, not a count of jobs offered.

The halls cover 5G and 6G, AI networks, semiconductors, non-terrestrial networks (internet that uses satellites, not only towers), cyber security, quantum communication, electronics manufacturing, and a few newer stalls: smart mobility, stadium tech, industrial robotics and transport. The source line is the Prime Minister’s Office note. If a booth volunteer contradicts that note, believe the note.

Three basics before the career talk

A semiconductor is a material, usually silicon, that is neither a full conductor like copper nor a full insulator like rubber. Factories etch tiny switches, called transistors, onto a silicon wafer. Those switches become the chip in your phone, your exam-centre computer and the box that runs a phone tower. If that sentence is new, read Semicon India 2026: what students should do before you pick a chip career from a reel.

5G is the current mobile network generation. It moves data between your phone and a tower. 6G is the next generation. It is not a course you can finish this semester. Companies at the show are talking about pieces of it: smarter radios, networks that fix themselves, and towers that sit closer to the user so a video call lags less.

An AI-native network means the phone network itself uses software that can detect a fault, shift traffic, or answer a simple request, instead of a person watching every alarm. It is not the same thing as a chatbot on your laptop. If you need that split, use AI agent vs chatbot. Hiring talk at the show is about network automation, data pipelines, chip design and security. It is not a promise that knowing ChatGPT gets you a stall interview.

Who should go, and who should skip

Go only if you are already in Delhi or NCR, you can enter without paying an agent, and you have a question for a booth. Students outside Delhi should not book a last-day flight because a creator said companies are selecting on the spot. A congress is a show. Offers, if any, still go through a company careers page.

Skip it if you wanted a placement letter by Sunday. Skip it if someone is selling an IMC internship pass on Instagram. The official event is not a paid campus drive. Skip it if you are in the middle of a board practical or an entrance mock and the only free hour is tonight. The event will not reprint your admit card.

What you can still do on 9 and 10 October

  • If you are in Delhi and already registered, visit one startup aisle and one operator stall. Ask how they take interns, what year they hire, and whether the form is on their own site. Write the URL. Do not hand your original marksheet to a person at a table.
  • Ask for the referral steps and the next date. We are hiring without a form is a sentence, not an offer.
  • If you are not in Delhi, open the PMO note and the company career page of one exhibitor you actually know. Save it. Do not pay a third party to register you into IMC hiring.
  • Pick one track for the next 30 days. Chip design basics, or network automation, or data work. Not all three. A Class 12 student can start with school physics plus one free, official course. A college student can tie the track to a lab or a GitHub file they already have.
  • For India AI hiring that is not a congress booth, read what AI engineering jobs in India actually ask for. Match your file to that, not to a keynote slide.

What the show does not change on campus

IMC does not publish a cutoff, a stipend or a vacancy table. Semicon India, held in the same city in September, did put numbers on plants and training. Those numbers live in the Semicon note linked above. Do not mix the two events. A 6G slide in October does not mean a fab job in Mohali opened yesterday.

Roles people will name at the stalls include machine learning engineer, data engineer, network automation and platform work. Those titles usually ask for a degree in progress plus a project. A Class 12 student is early for the title and on time for the habit: one small project, one clean note on what you built, no fake internship certificate.

Quantum communication and non-terrestrial networks are on the agenda. They are research-heavy. If you are choosing a college this year, they are a reason to keep physics and maths, not a reason to buy a quantum placement course.

A 30-day check you can actually finish

Week one: write, in one page, what a chip is and what a mobile tower does. Use the Semicon note and the PMO note. If you cannot explain both to a classmate, you are not ready to pick a stall job.

Week two: build or finish one small thing. A Class 12 student can document a school project with inputs, output and what failed. A college student can automate one boring lab task, or read one datasheet and write what each pin does.

Week three: find one real application page. Company site, not a form that asks for a fee. If the page has no date, do not invent one.

Week four: stop. If the project is still a screenshot of someone else’s app, the congress did not fail you. The file did. Fix the file before the next show.

Questions that came up around the inauguration

Did the Prime Minister announce a new student scheme on 8 October? The PMO pre-event note describes the theme, pillars and sectors. It does not print a new scholarship amount or a last date. Do not forward a number you cannot find on pmindia.gov.in.

Is 6G a branch I should choose in counselling? No Indian college counselling form has a 6G branch because of this show. Electronics, communication, computer science and instrumentation still map to the work. The show does not create a new JEE paper.

Can I put attended IMC 2026 on a resume? Only if you attended. One line is enough. It is not work experience. A booth photo is not an internship.

Updated 9 October 2026. The halls close on 10 October. After that, use the company page and the Semicon note, not an expired event badge.
