Indian captain on Flydubai flight: what students should know
The Indian captain on the Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv is the name you will hear in class discussions this week. On 30 September 2026, Flydubai flight FZ1073 left Dubai for Tel Aviv. Mid-air, the co-pilot stabbed the captain. The plane dropped thousands of feet in under two minutes. Passengers and crew got into the cockpit, stopped the attacker, and the jet landed at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. The stabbed captain is Indian national Smit Machchhar. He is in a stable condition. Motive is still under investigation. Officials in Israel have called it an attempted crash. Saudi authorities have arrested the co-pilot.
This page is not a thriller recap. It is a plain briefing for Class 12 and college students: what happened, what we still do not know, and what the story actually means if you are thinking about becoming a pilot — or if you just fly home twice a year.
What happened on the Flydubai flight, in simple words
Commercial planes have two pilots in the cockpit. One is the captain. The other is the first officer, also called the co-pilot. Both can fly the aircraft. After 9/11, cockpit doors are locked from inside during flight so a passenger cannot walk in. That lock also means that if one pilot turns on the other, help from the cabin is delayed.
According to statements reported by the BBC and Indian outlets on 30 September 2026:
- Flight FZ1073 took off from Dubai International towards Ben Gurion Airport, Tel Aviv.
- The co-pilot stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar.
- The aircraft entered a steep descent. Reports put the drop near 14,000–17,000 feet in less than two minutes.
- Machchhar fought back and opened the cockpit door so cabin crew and passengers could enter.
- Passengers and off-duty pilots on board helped restrain the attacker.
- The plane made an emergency landing at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
- Passengers later reached Israel on another flight. Flydubai said it was suspending flights to and from Israel while the investigation continues.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Machchhar a hero and said he saved the people on board. The Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia said the captain was stable. Do not treat social-media motive theories as fact. The investigation is with Saudi authorities. That is the official clock that matters.

Who is Smit Machchhar
Public profiles and Indian reporting describe him as a Gujarati pilot from the Mumbai flying circuit. He flew with SpiceJet from 2011 to 2022 — about 11 years — including work as a line training captain. That means he sat with junior pilots and checked whether they flew the Boeing 737 the way the airline wanted. In June 2022 he joined Flydubai as a direct-entry captain. LinkedIn-style summaries circulating in news reports put his Boeing 737 hours near 9,750. He also holds a business administration degree from Welingkar Institute of Management.
Two facts matter for students more than the medal language:
- He did not jump from Class 12 to a Gulf cockpit. He spent a decade on an Indian low-cost airline first.
- Training captain work is a second skill on top of flying hours. Airlines pay for that only after you already have command experience.
First, the basics: how a person becomes an airline pilot in India
If you are in Class 12 and the word “captain” sounds like a job title you can pick next year, pause. In India the usual civilian path looks like this.
1. Medical. You need a DGCA Class 2 medical first, then Class 1 before a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). Colour vision, heart, ears, and mental fitness are checked. A reject here ends the plan cheaper than a rejected loan later.
2. Licence ladder. Student Pilot Licence, then Private Pilot Licence hours, then CPL. A CPL needs flying hours, written papers, and a radio telephony exam. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) writes the rules. Read them on the official site, not on a coaching WhatsApp forward: dgca.gov.in.
3. Type rating. A CPL lets you be a pilot. An airline still has to train you on one aircraft type — Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 in most Indian first jobs. That course is separate money.
4. First job. Indian carriers hire cadets and experienced first officers in cycles. When oil is expensive and ticket demand is soft, hiring slows. A Gulf airline job, like Flydubai, usually comes after Indian hours, not instead of them.
Rough money, in plain numbers students actually face: a full CPL plus type rating in India often lands in the ₹35 lakh to ₳70 lakh band depending on the school, aircraft, and how many extra hours you buy. Families borrow. Some students finish CPL and sit without a type rating. Some finish type rating and sit without a roster. That gap is the part brochures skip.
Who this career is for, and who should skip it this year
Use this as a filter, not a pep talk.
Consider the pilot path only if all of these are true:
- You can pass a Class 1 medical and keep passing it every year. One failed ECG later can freeze a licence.
- Your family can fund training without selling the only house, or you have a written cadet scheme from an airline that states who pays for what.
- You can live with irregular sleep, night landings, and long time away from home.
- You treat English radio calls and weather math as daily tools, not exam chapters.
Skip the paid flying school brochure this month if:
- You only liked the “hero captain” headline and have not sat through a discovery flight or a medical.
- A counsellor is asking for a full fee before you have seen the DGCA-approved school list and the aircraft you will actually fly.
- Your plan is “Gulf airline in two years” with zero Indian hours. That is not how Machchhar’s timeline worked.
- You need a stable 9-to-5 income in 2027 to support parents. Pilot hiring is lumpy. Look at campus placements and PSU calendars in parallel. Our running board is here: Campus Reality recruitments.
What students who only fly as passengers should do this week
Most readers of this site will never sit in a cockpit. The useful actions are smaller.
- When you book a ticket, note the airline and the aircraft type. You do not need to fear flying because of one crew crime. You do need the airline’s official advisory if a route is suspended, as Flydubai did for Israel flights after this incident.
- Do not forward cockpit videos or unnamed “insider” motive posts. They travel faster than corrections and can harass the wrong family.
- If a classmate is collecting money for a flying academy this week, ask for the DGCA approval number of that school before anyone pays a token amount.
Cockpit security, without the movie version
Two ideas get mixed up in group chats.
Reinforced door. The lock is there so a hijacker in the cabin cannot reach the controls. That design assumes the people already inside the cockpit are the safe ones.
Two-person rule. Some airlines require that if one pilot leaves for the toilet, a cabin crew member steps into the cockpit so one person is never alone at the controls. Rules differ by country and airline. Students should not invent a global rule from one flight.
This incident is rare. That is why it is news. Rare is not the same as impossible. Aviation safety is a stack of medical checks, simulator sessions, security screening, and locked doors. One layer failing does not mean the whole stack is theatre. It means investigators will look at hiring, psychological assessment, and cockpit procedures on that airline and that route.
How this ties to a campus week
Three clocks, not one headline:
- Today: If you have relatives on Gulf-to-Israel itineraries, use the airline app, not forwarded lists. Flydubai has already said Israel flights are paused during the probe.
- This month: Class 12 students comparing PCM with a flying career should book a DGCA Class 2 medical before they book a ₹10-lakh “seat” at a private academy.
- This year: Engineering and science students who like aviation but will not fund a CPL still have ground paths — aircraft maintenance engineering (AME), air traffic control exams, airport operations, and aerospace engineering. Those have different fees and different hiring boards.
For the money side of travel weeks — fuel, tickets, mess — we already logged how oil prices reach a hostel budget: oil prices and your hostel budget.
Short FAQ
Was the stabbed pilot Indian? Yes. Reporting names him as Captain Smit Machchhar, previously with SpiceJet, then Flydubai from 2022.
Did passengers land in Israel on the same plane? No. The jet stopped at Tabuk. Passengers moved later on another flight.
Is the motive confirmed? No. Treat “terror” labels from politicians as claims until the investigating country publishes charges.
Can a Class 12 student become a Gulf captain in four years? Unlikely. Count medical + CPL + type rating + Indian hours first. Machchhar’s public timeline is closer to 15 years of commercial flying.
Campus Reality will not turn one mid-air crime into a flying-school ad. If you want the job, start with the medical and the official DGCA syllabus. If you only needed the news in words a Class 12 student can use in assembly, you now have the facts that were actually printed on 30 September and 1 October 2026.
