IIT Kharagpur is one of the original IITs, set up in 1951. It runs undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes across engineering, science, architecture, management, law, humanities and interdisciplinary areas. The PhD programme is for research scholars who will work under faculty supervisors and, in many cases, receive institute or external fellowships.
What kind of seat this is
This is a doctoral research seat (PhD). Categories include Regular with Institute Assistantship, Individual Fellowship (CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR/INSPIRE etc.), Sponsored candidates, and Working Professionals. There is no campus-wide bond printed on the rolling notice. You will be based primarily at the Kharagpur campus unless a specific project or external registration is approved.
Who should apply — and who should skip
Apply if you have the required qualifying degree (M.Tech/ME/MS or equivalent for most engineering/science areas; B.Tech with GATE in specified cases) and meet the marks/CGPA cut-offs printed in the brochure (60% or 6.5 CGPA in engineering/science/commerce/management/law; 55% or 6.0 in humanities/social science/MBBS). B.Tech from IITs/CFTIs or NIRF top-25 institutes with high CGPA can sometimes apply without GATE under TA category.
Skip if you do not have a qualifying degree yet and cannot complete it before the relevant quarter processing, if you need a fixed January joining date that is not confirmed for rolling applicants, or if you are looking for a coursework-heavy taught programme rather than research. Do not apply on lookalike domains.
