Fake Internships, Scholarships and Colleges: How to Check Before You Pay (2026)
Last updated: 13 Oct 2026
A genuine internship, scholarship or college admission never asks you to pay a “registration”, “training” or “refundable” fee to a person or a private link. Before you pay or share documents, take two minutes to check the offer on the official portal named below. If you’ve already lost money, call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or report it at cybercrime.gov.in, the same day if you can.
Why this matters right now
- Fake college: on 12 Oct 2026, the Supreme Court directed the UGC and other regulators to issue public advisories. These ask people not to take admission without first checking that an institution is genuine. The order came after a fake “medical college” was found running from a dilapidated farmhouse in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. (Hindustan Times)
- Fake internship: in July 2026, PIB Fact Check called out a Google Form offering internships “approved” by the MSME Ministry and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Neither ministry had authorised it. (AIR News)
- Fake scheme: in September 2026, PIB Fact Check debunked a “National Student Laptop Scheme 2026” that claimed to take applications for free laptops. (Mint)
The 2-minute check (works for any offer)
- Who’s asking for money? If you’re asked to pay a person, a UPI ID or a private link for “registration”, “training”, “kit”, “certificate” or a “refundable deposit”, stop.
- Is it on the official site? Look the offer up yourself on the organisation’s website. Don’t use the link you were sent. Government sites end in .gov.in or .nic.in.
- Was there a real selection? Instant “you’re selected” messages with no test or interview are a warning sign.
- Is the contact official? Recruiters at real companies write from the company’s domain, not from Gmail or a lookalike domain.
- Is there pressure? “Pay within 2 hours or lose your seat” is a classic scam line.
- Are they asking for OTPs or passwords? No genuine organisation needs your OTP, PIN or password. Ever.
Where do I verify each kind of offer?
| If it’s a… | Check it here | What genuine looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Central government scholarship | scholarships.gov.in (NSP) | Applied for on NSP itself, free. Not through forms shared in groups |
| PM Internship Scheme | pminternship.mca.gov.in | Applications only on the official portal |
| AICTE-listed internships (including defence programmes) | internship.aicte-india.org | Listed on the AICTE National Internship Portal |
| A university or college | ugc.gov.in (UGC’s list of fake universities and recognised universities) | The university appears in UGC’s recognised list. The course has the regulator’s approval where needed |
| A company internship or job | The company’s own careers page | Same role and job ID on the careers page. Offer email from the company domain |
| Any “government scheme” forward | PIB Fact Check | Announced on a ministry website or by PIB |
Real vs fake: quick examples
| Looks like | Real version | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| “Indian Army internship, ₹75,000 stipend, click to apply” email | Applications go through the AICTE National Internship Portal | An unsolicited email with an “apply” link that asks for personal details |
| “Ministry-approved internship” Google Form | Ministries post on their own websites | A Google Form, with no ministry link |
| “Free laptop for students 2026” | No such scheme (PIB Fact Check, Sept 2026) | Asks for Aadhaar and bank details |
| “Scholarship guaranteed, pay ₹999 processing fee” | NSP is free to apply | Any fee to “process” a scholarship |
I already paid or shared details. What now?
- Call 1930 (national cybercrime helpline) or file at cybercrime.gov.in straight away. Reporting quickly gives the best chance of freezing the money.
- Tell your bank or UPI app. Report the transaction and block your card if you shared its details.
- Change your passwords and turn on two-factor authentication on your email and banking apps.
- Save evidence: screenshots of chats, the offer, the payment receipt and the UPI ID or account number.
- Don’t pay a “refund fee”. Scammers often come back promising to return your money for a charge.
- Warn others: tell your placement cell or class group so nobody else falls for it.
FAQs
Do genuine internships ever charge a fee?
No. Genuine internships, paid or unpaid, don’t charge you to join. Payment from you to the “employer” is the clearest sign of a scam.
How do I check if a university is fake?
Check UGC’s website (ugc.gov.in), which publishes a list of fake universities and recognised ones. Professional courses also need approval from their regulator, for example the medical, nursing or pharmacy council.
Is the NSP scholarship free to apply?
Yes. Apply only on scholarships.gov.in. Nobody can “sanction” a scholarship for a fee.
What is 1930?
The national cybercrime helpline. Call it, or report at cybercrime.gov.in, if you lose money to online fraud.
A message says I’m selected for an internship I never applied for. Is it real?
Almost certainly not. Don’t click the link. Check the organisation’s official site yourself.
