IIIT Pune Visvesvaraya PhD admission 2026 is a small scheme window, not a regular institute PhD round. Last date — 9 October 2026 (Friday). A clock time is not printed on the brochure. What IIIT Pune actually does

Indian Institute of Information Technology Pune is an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Education. This notice is not the regular M.Tech or B.Tech seat. It is Phase II of the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics and IT, run for this cycle with three seats only.

If you only know IIIT as a B.Tech college, read this first. A PhD seat here means a research registration, a written test or interview, and a fellowship only if the scheme card you pick actually pays one. A postdoctoral fellowship (PDF) is for someone who already has a PhD. It is not a second master’s.

What kind of seat this is

Three seats in total: one full-time PhD, one part-time PhD, and one PDF. Departments named on the brochure are Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering. Campus is Pune. No bond amount is printed. No TA or DA is paid for the test or interview. The institute can leave a seat empty.

Who should apply — and who should skip

Apply for the full-time PhD if you have a BE/B.Tech in a relevant area with CGPA 6.5/10 or 60% (6.0/10 or 55% for SC/ST/PwD) and an ME/M.Tech in a relevant area at the same mark bar, or first class on the degree certificate, plus a valid GATE score in CS, DA, EC or EE. The brochure also lists a route for graduates of CFTI / INI / government autonomous institutes / institutes or universities below 100 NIRF / foreign institutes with QS ranking below 1000.

Apply for the part-time seat only if you already have at least three years of relevant experience and your employer will give a No Objection Certificate. Selected part-time candidates must not be taking any PhD fellowship from another Central or State scheme.

Skip if you want a normal institute PhD with many departments, if you already take a government PhD fellowship, or if you are looking for a paid internship this month. Skip the PDF card if you do not already have a PhD, if you finished the PhD at IIIT Pune itself, or if you are in regular employment. Temporary researchers can be considered, but they must leave that role if selected. PDF age cap is 40 years on the date you submit the form, and the PhD must have been completed within the past five years on 9 October 2026.

Available positions

1. Full-time PhD — Visvesvaraya, CSE or ECE 1 seat

Eligibility criteria
BE/B.Tech in a relevant area with minimum CGPA 6.5/10 or 60% (6.0/10 or 55% for SC/ST/PwD) and ME/M.Tech in a relevant area at the same bar, or first class on the degree certificate. Valid GATE in CS/DA/EC/EE. A route is also printed for graduates of CFTI / INI / government autonomous institutes / NIRF-below-100 institutes or universities / foreign institutes with QS ranking below 1000. Fellowship Rs 46,250 per month in year 1 and year 2, and Rs 52,500 per month in years 3, 4 and 5. Reimbursement of rent at 24%, 16% and 8% of fellowship for X, Y and Z class cities if the institute does not give a hostel. Research contingency up to Rs 1,20,000 per year. International conference support and a lab visit abroad are printed from year 3, with conditions. Minimum duration before thesis submission: 3 years. Anyone already funded by another government PhD scheme is out of this support.

2. Part-time PhD — Visvesvaraya, CSE or ECE 1 seat

Eligibility criteria
Same degree and mark bar as the full-time card, plus minimum 3 years of relevant experience in an allied field. NOC from the employer. No monthly fellowship. One-time incentive of Rs 3 lakh on successful completion, and only if you are not taking another government PhD fellowship. Minimum duration before thesis submission: 3 years.

3. Postdoctoral fellowship — CSE or ECE 1 seat

Eligibility criteria
Indian citizen. PhD from a recognised university with first class from graduation onward. PhD completed within the past 5 years on the last date. Age at most 40 on the date of submission. Not a PhD from IIIT Pune. Not in regular employment. At least the publication and industry-linkage preference lines printed on the brochure apply; candidates who already took this scheme fellowship are not eligible. Fellowship Rs 1,08,393 per month. Contingency Rs 1,00,000 per year, pro-rata. Travel support up to Rs 2.10 lakh on the heads printed. Female PDF candidates may take up to 6 months maternity leave with fellowship, inside a maximum of 12 months of total fellowship support. Appointment is a temporary full-time assignment.
