IIT Indore sustainability PhD admission 2026 is the October 2026-27 call from the Mehta Family School of Sustainability. Last date of application — 16 October 2026. Written exam and interview — 2 November 2026. Official advertisement — iiti.ac.in PDF. Eligibility page linked from the ad — phd_info/engineering.

What this school actually does

IIT Indore is an Institute of National Importance on Khandwa Road, Simrol. The Mehta Family School of Sustainability is an interdisciplinary school, not a single engineering department. Faculty work on land, water and forest economics, climate and farm productivity, energy storage, carbon capture, plasma and waste-to-product chemistry, algal biotechnology, floods and droughts, and satellite rainfall. A PhD here means a research degree with a faculty guide, not a taught M.Tech.

What kind of seat this is

The advertisement lists Indian categories: FA (fellowship already won from CSIR, UGC, NBHM, DST or similar — stipend follows that agency), FAP (project staff under an IIT Indore faculty PI), FAR (research development fund), TA (institute teaching assistantship as per MoE guidelines, or valid CSIR-NET/UGC NET Category-3), SW (sponsored, no institute scholarship, full-time or part-time after coursework), IS (regular IIT Indore staff, part-time), and DF (serving defence personnel, no institute scholarship). International seats are ISF, ISW and GSW. A time of day is not printed on the 16 October deadline.

Who should apply — and who should skip

Apply if you have a first division in a listed master’s: M.Tech/M.E./M.S. in civil, environmental, climate, earth, water, energy, agriculture, hydrology, CSE, nano, electrical, mechanical, chemical, metallurgy, materials, industrial, remote sensing, GIS or space; or M.Sc in climate, environmental, earth, atmospheric science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, space, nano, statistics, economics, agriculture, materials, life sciences, geoinformatics or actuarial science; or MA/LLM/MBA in geography, economics, statistics, sociology, law, political science or public policy. A B.Tech/B.E. in the same engineering list is allowed only with a valid GATE score and first division.

First division for UR/EWS/OBC(NC) means 60% in aggregate, or first class as the university defines it, or CGPA/CPI 6.0 on a 10-point scale. For SC/ST/PwD it is 55%, or first class, or 5.5 CGPA. FA needs UGC-CSIR-JRF, DST-INSPIRE or an equivalent fellowship. TA with M.Tech/M.E. needs GATE, CSIR-UGC-NET-LS or CSIR-UGC-NET-PhD-only in the subject. TA with M.Sc, B.Tech, BE, LLM or MBA needs a valid GATE or the same NET family in the subject. IIT M.Sc or B.Tech with CPI 8.50 or above on a 10-point scale is exempt from that test.

Skip if your degree is outside the printed list and you cannot map it to one research area. Skip if you need a hostel stipend but you only have a degree and no GATE, NET or external fellowship — TA and FA both need a qualifying exam or an existing award, unless the IIT CPI exemption applies. Skip if you cannot come to Indore for the 2 November written exam and interview. No TA/DA is paid.

How to prepare (free, official)

How to apply without getting played

  1. Use the institute PDF, not a coaching form.
  2. Fee is not printed here. Do not pay a third party who quotes a “seat charge”.
  3. Pick one research area. A generic SOP that names no faculty area is a weak file.
  4. Letters go to the school email, not only into a portal, if the ad’s note is the rule you are following.
