VNIT Nagpur PhD admission January 2027 opened on 25 September 2026. Last date for the Google Form and for the hard copy by speed post or hand — 2 November 2026. Apply from the VNIT academic admission page. Brochure — January 2027 information brochure. Dates sheet — important dates PDF.

What VNIT Nagpur actually does

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is an Institute of National Importance. A PhD here is a research degree, full-time or part-time, not an M.Tech classroom seat. The January 2027 cycle covers departments from architecture and civil to CSE, ECE, mining, physics, chemistry, mathematics and an interdisciplinary biomedical board. Institute fellowship, if you get Cat. 1A, starts from 4 January 2027 or your joining date, whichever is later.

What kind of seat this is

Full-time Cat. 1A is institute (MoE) assistantship, only for GATE or NET qualified candidates, amount as per norms. Cat. 1B is paid from a sponsored project. Cat. 1C is an external fellowship (UGC, DST, DBT, ICMR, CSIR, DAE); you need the award letter, and the agency sets the amount and duration. Cat. 1D is sponsored or self-sponsored, no VNIT money, GATE not mandatory, and a sponsored candidate needs an NOC and release for at least three years of coursework and research. Part-time Cat. 2A gets no VNIT assistantship and needs an employer NOC. Cat. 2B is part-time for people with five or more years of industry or academic experience in a reputed institute. Visvesvaraya PhD scheme seats, if available, may be filled under Cat. 1A with that scheme’s own rules.

Who should apply — and who should skip

Apply if your marks meet the floor at either UG or PG: GEN 6.5 CGPA or 60%, OBC-NC 6.0 CGPA or 55%, SC/ST 5.5 CGPA or 50%. The department page in the brochure then adds the branch. Direct PhD from B.Tech is allowed in the categories the brochure lists. Cat. 1A needs a qualified GATE or NET score. The brochure says a qualified GATE/NET score (in the past) is mandatory for category 1(A).

Skip if you want a stipend but you have no GATE or NET and no external award — Cat. 1D and part-time do not pay a VNIT assistantship. Skip if you cannot reach Nagpur on 1 or 2 December 2026. No TA/DA. Skip if your hard copy will miss 2 November. Incomplete or late forms can be rejected.
